AUSTIN, Texas – Manhattan opened its three-game series at Texas with an 8-1 loss on Friday night.
Will Hesslink kept Manhattan (3-9) in the game through the first five innings. The lefty allowed three unearned runs and scattered five hits over his five innings of work.
The first run of the game was scored off a bases-loaded walk to Peyton Powell in the bottom of the first. In the fifth, Garret Guilmette brought in the second run with a double. Two batters later, he came around to score on an error.
Texas' (7-7) first earned run of the night came in the seventh when Jalin Flores made it 4-0 with a single to right field.
The Longhorns then tacked on four in the eighth. A double, single, and error brought home the three runs. Powell doubled to right to bring in his second and third RBI of the night.
Trevor Santos supplied the lone run for Manhattan with a solo home run in the top of the ninth. Santos took a 1-2 pitch over the wall down the right-field line.
Lucas Gordon picked up the win for Texas. Gordon did not allow a hit over his six innings of work.
The Jaspers and Longhorns return to the diamond on Saturday for game two of the series at 2 p.m. Eastern.
