NEW YORK - The Manhattan College men's and women's indoor track & field teams notched three event wins and four ECAC/IC4A qualifying times at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Races. Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden) won the men's mile and ran a leg on the victorious 4x800 meter relay team, while Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) took first place in the 1000 meters on the women's side. In addition to Rojeras and the 4x800 squad, Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Ashley Bowman (Elmont, N.Y.) qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Saturday.
After notching a winning time of 4:12.98 in the mile, Rojeras joined with Perrier, Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) and Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) to capture first place in the 4x800 relay. The quartet's 7:47.32 clocking was more than five seconds ahead of the second-place team from Princeton, and easily qualified Manhattan for the IC4A Championships in the event.
In the 800 meters, Perrier finished fifth overall in 1:53.99, which was under the IC4A qualifying threshold. Sheldon Derenoncourt (Patchogue, N.Y.) turned in a solid performance in the 400 meters. He posted a time of 49.64 seconds, good enough for third place overall. Abdias Myrtil (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) grabbed sixth place in the 60 meters (7.06), while Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany) had a pair of top six showings. Bechert placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.40) and sixth in the high jump (1.95 m, 6'4¾).
The Manhattan women also had a strong showing. Koskinen's winning time of 2:58.87 in the 1000 meters was just shy of the ECAC qualifying mark. Bowman did qualifying for the ECAC Championships in the 200 meters, grabbing second place (first among collegians) in 24.88 seconds. Bowman also finished third in the 60 meters (7.73). Cara Rostant (Valley Stream, N.Y.) added a third place effort of her own in the 400 meters (57.42). In addition, Doreen Horschig (Lumpzig, Germany) placed sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.97), Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) was sixth in the 800 meters (2:27.05) and Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) took sixth in the 3000 meters (10:52.50).
This was the first team-scored meet of the season for the Jaspers. The men finished fifth as a team with 41 points, while the women also collected 41 points to place sixth as a team. The Princeton men (175.5) and Connecticut (204) women posted the top team scores of the night.
Manhattan returns to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center next weekend, when the entire squad is reunited for the Albany Great Dane Classic. Competition gets underway at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
