CHARLESTON, SC – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (0-8, 0-0 MAAC) was narrowly edged by the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (9-7, 0-0 Big South) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Jaspers opened the contest with an Angelina Gencarelli two-out single through the right side to register itself in the hit column first.
- After the Buccaneers recorded the game's first run, Brianna Estevez opened the third inning with a single through the right side and was driven in by Gencarelli's single into left field.
- Upon scoring the second run for Charleston Southern in the home half of the third, the Buccaneers didn't look back.
- Starting pitcher Karissa Spring continued right where she left off the day before, as the sophomore surrendered one hit in the bottom of the fourth before forcing a ground-out to end the inning effectively.
- In the bottom of the sixth, relief pitcher Victoria Diaz landed in some trouble before forcing a fly out to centerfield by Charleston Southern's Yourman.
STATS AND NOTES
- Sophomore starting pitcher Karissa Spring etched four innings into her resume, allowing five hits and two runs, where one was earned. Additionally, Spring punched out two in 19 batters faced.
- Freshman Angelina Gencarelli logged three hits on the afternoon, with the lone run-batted-in on the day. Gencarelli finished the three-game set with five hits on the weekend.
