JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A breakdown in the eighth inning resulted in five damaging runs that the Manhattan Jaspers baseball team could not overcome, leading to an 8-5 loss in the series finale against the Saint Peter's Peacocks at Jaroschak Field.
The sweep marks the first in program history that did not favor the Jaspers. Manhattan drops to 9-20 overall and 3-6 in MAAC competition, while Saint Peter's improves to 10-22 and 4-5, respectively.
The Jaspers finished with nine knocks, with all but one player tallying a hit. Sophomore
Drew Wyers led with a 2-for-4 outing, scoring two runs and netting 2 RBIs.
Noah Mattera threw 90 pitches today and went five innings to start the game. The southpaw allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three.
Connor O'Neill (1-3) took the loss in 3.0 innings of work, conceding five runs on five hits in 17 batters faced.
John Wade (2-0) earned the win for Saint Peter's after holding the Green and White scoreless in the eighth and picking up two strikeouts in his single-inning effort.
Logan Pfannenbecker jumpstarted Manhattan's offense with a single to right field, followed by a deep double to center by Wyers. The extra relay gave the sophomore an extra base, allowing Pfannenbecker to score and Wyers to follow suit on the next groundout for the Jaspers' opening pair across the plate.
Saint Peter's tallied one run in the bottom of the frame and managed to take the lead in the bottom of the third after three straight walks issued by Mattera loaded the bases, and a single up the middle brought two home.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the seventh, a sacrifice fly by Wyers scored
Trevor Hansen, who reached on a base hit, knotting the score. The go-ahead run came across in the eighth on a single to right field from
Andreaus Lewis to score
Vincent Davis.
The lead exited as quickly as it came, with Saint Peter's capitalizing on every Manhattan miscue for a game-winning five-run frame.
Wyers managed to score again in the top of the ninth on a sac fly from Swain after reaching on a double. Davis singled and
Daniel Perez walked, but the two were left stranded in the late rally.
