NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College men's basketball team played a rivalry game today on the road, taking a 73-63 defeat at Iona on Friday evening.
"Credit to Iona for the start of the second half which was the difference in the game," said head coach
John Gallagher. "As for us, we need to find a way to put 40 minutes together. We look forward to getting back to practice tomorrow and preparing for Rider."
Manhattan (6–17, 3-11 MAAC) was led by
Seydou Traore who scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Daniel Rouzan scored nine points for the Jaspers, while
Jaden Winston added five points and 11 assists.
Iona (13-11, 8-5 MAAC) was led by Wheza Panzo who scored 21 points. Greg Gordon scored 19 points and seven rebounds for the Gaels.
The Jaspers used an effective shooting half to take an early lead. The Jaspers shot over 50% in the half including 5 of 11 from three-point in the frame. The game went back and forth throughout the half with no team leading by more than five at any point. Traore scored the Jaspers last five points of the half, giving them a 31-29 halftime lead.Â
Iona however came out of the gates hot in the second half, storming to a 44-34 lead within four minutes of the second half. Manhattan would close the gap to four briefly before the Gaels would again go up double-digits, taking a 61-51 lead with 7:13 remaining. Manhattan had trouble getting anything to fall for the rest of the way, allowing Iona to finish the job and grabÂ
Manhattan shot 46% from the floor and 35.3% from three-point. They recorded 30 points in the paint and 15 bench points.Â
Iona shot 45.5% from the floor and 40.7% from three-point. They recorded 22 points in the paint and 30 bench points.
The Jaspers next take the court on Sunday when they return home to Riverdale to take on Rider at 2 p.m. on Kids Day/Jersey Day.
