HAMDEN, C.T. - The Manhattan men's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac University, 76-59 at M&T Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
"As we continue to build the program, there's going to be growing pains that are involved as we continue to move forward," said
Coach Gallagher. "There are some bright spots that we need to build off of and continue to correct the mistakes. Tip your hat to Quinnipiac. Their maturity was a huge difference in the game. We will continue to get better and look forward to practice this week."
The Jaspers (4-9, 1-3 MAAC) were led in scoring by
Seydou Traore who recorded 11 points and eight rebounds.
Logan Padgett added 10 points and eight rebounds for Manhattan.
Quinnipiac (10-5, 3-1 MAAC) was led in scoring by Paul Otieno who recorded 23 points and nine rebounds. Savion Lewis added 15 points and five rebounds.
Quinnipiac controlled the first half leading 70.3 percent of the game scoring 42 points, 17 rebounds, and 13 steals. The Jasper defense forced 25 Bobcat turnovers but the home team still managed to keep the lead.
The Jaspers had a rough start as they shot 39.3 percent from the floor, but were held back by committing 16 turnovers. Manhattan made all its free throws (4-4) and recorded 14 rebounds in the first half.
In the second half, Manhattan shot 34.4 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line. The Jaspers connected on 32 points in the paint and collected 19 bench points. Manhattan caught up (34-32) leaving a 2-point lead for Quinnipiac but it wasn't enough to get the victory.
Quinnipiac managed to stay consistent in the second half shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line They had 48 points in the paint and 12 bench points.
Manhattan will play at Rider University on Friday, Jan. 12. Tip-off in Lawrenceville, NJ is set for 7 p.m. The Jaspers will turn around and host Saint Peter's on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. for Small Business Day/Parents Day.
