NEW YORK, N.Y. - Manhattan women's basketball came out victorious in a conference road contest at Iona, 64-56 Saturday afternoon.
"Another great road win! Love how this team fights adversity plays hard for each other and plays to win," said head coach Heather Vulin. "Leyla has continued her breakout Senior year. Our team did a great job getting her the ball."
The Jaspers (14-4, 7-2 MAAC) were led in scoring by Leyla Ozturk who recorded 19 points and six rebounds. Ines Gimenez Monserrat added 16 points, while Niztan Amar added 12 for Manhattan.
Iona (7-11, 2-7 MAAC) started the game taking a 10-2 lead, setting the tone early in the game. Manhattan responded, finishing the quarter down four, 15-11. The second quarter went back and forth, with the score at 27-24 at the half. Ozturk scored the last six points of the half for the Jaspers.
Iona once again came out hot in the third quarter, jumping out to a 35-26 lead. However, Manhattan would salvage the rest of the quarter going on a commanding 17-2 run, extending into the start of the fourth quarter, taking a 43-37 lead. The Jaspers extended their lead to 54-43 with 4:44 remaining, following a layup and a three-pointer by Gimenez Monserrat. Iona answered, cutting the lead to 54-48, with 2:35 to go. The Jaspers connected on their late game free throws, finishing the game with a 64-56 victory.
Manhattan shot 43.6% from the floor and 35.3% from three-point. They recorded 24 points in the paint.
Iona shot 47.9% from the floor and 50.0% from three-point. They recorded 18 points in the paint and three bench points.
Manhattan will travel to Loudonville, NY, and play Siena College on Thursday, Feb, 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
