NEW YORK, N.Y. – Manhattan concluded the first day of the Columbia Tournament with a 3-1 loss to Columbia.
In the first set, the Jaspers pushed the Lions to surpass the standard 25 points. The Jaspers and the Lions traded points throughout the entire first set, with the lead fluctuating by two to three points at a time. At the end of the set, the Jaspers led 25-24. However, the Lions were able to invoke the two-point win rule, scoring three consecutive points to secure the set.
The Jaspers came back in the second set with determination, winning it 25-22. The Jaspers initiated the set by earning the first point, thanks to a service error by the Lions. The second set played a similar tune to the first however finished on a different note. When leading the Lions by one at 23-22, the Jaspers clawed their way to victory in the second by following up a service error by the lions with an ace by
Mikalah Curran.
The last two sets of the game resulted in Lions victories, bringing them to a 3-1 overall win.
Curran led the Jaspers in kills, securing them the set-winning ace with 10 kills, followed by
Camila Gomez with seven.
Sarah Emmons achieved a career high in assists tonight, dishing out 33 to her teammates. Leading the Jaspers in defense was Gomez with eight digs.
Manhattan plays again on Saturday, September 9th, at 3:00 p.m. against Morgan State University in New York, N.Y., in the Columbia Tournament.
