POMONA, N.Y. – The Manhattan baseball team could not complete the MAAC series sweep of Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon, falling 15-10 at Clover Stadium.
Manhattan returns to action next week when they make their second trip to Western New York, this time for a weekend series with Canisius which is set to begin on Friday.
The Mount got the jump on the Jaspers in the first inning, as many other teams have done this year, plating a trio of runs on the same amount of hits for an early advantage.
The bottom of the first was just as eventful as the top. With the Mount's starter only throwing 14 pitches, the Jaspers had managed to tie things up at three.
Frankie Marinelli led the inning off with a single that split the right side of the infield. Another pair of singles followed by
Logan Pfannenbecker and
Pete Durocher loaded the bases for cleanup man
Jack Lynch. During the at-bat, all Jaspers moved over 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch, making the score 3-1.
Lynch delivered a single to deep left field which stayed fair to score Pfannenbecker and move Durocher to third.
Trevor Santos stepped in next and smacked a double down the right-field line to score Durocher and tie the game up at three.
The Mount finally got its first out of the inning when they coaxed
Jacob Radziewicz into a groundout, but that resulted in Lynch scoring and the Jaspers taking a 4-3 lead. Santos scored on a passed ball during the next at-bat to make the score 5-3 and wrap up the scoring for the inning. The inning did end with the Jaspers completely batting around.
The lead swung back to the Mount, who used a five-run fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Manhattan had a chance to cut into the lead in the home half of the inning, loading the bases with one out but the Mount got out of it by striking out
Ryan Eaton on three pitches and Marinelli fouling out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Durocher and Lynch connected for back-to-back solo home runs to get the Green and White back in the game, 10-7.
The Mount tacked on one run in the seventh inning but the Jaspers refused to put away. For the second straight game,
Daniel Perez went yard, this time a three-run shot to bring Manhattan within one, 11-10.
The Mount plated four runs in the top of the ninth to seal the game and avoid the sweep.
