BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Manhattan Baseball team was defeated in game one of its weekend MAAC series with Canisius, 14-6, at Demske Sports Complex.
Game two of the series is set for tomorrow at 6 p.m.
Will Hesslink coughed up a three-run home run to the Golden Griffin's Jackson Strong in the third inning for the first offense of the game.
Manhattan did threaten in the top of the same inning.
Frankie Marinelli reached on a two-out single which was followed up by a full-count walk drawn by
Logan Pfannenbecker to put runners on the first second, but Canisius' Matt Duffy coaxed
Pete Durocher into a fly out to get out of the inning.
Another six runs came around to score in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of walks and two RBI singles.
Manhattan got on the board in the fifth inning, following a double by
Trevor Santos,
Trevor Hansen brought him around on a single. Pfannenbecker delivered his second home run of the season to bring Hansen home, making the score 9-3.
In the home half of the inning,
Greg Shaw, who came in to relieve Hesslink in the inning before, struck out the side all on-called strikes.
Manhattan got within striking distance with back-to-back home runs from Pfannenbecker and Durocher to make the score 9-6. What followed was a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases with two out for
Trevor Santos but he could not deliver. Canisius regained the ground lost and more in the home half of the inning, plating another five runs.
The four home runs are a season-high for the Jaspers.
