POMONA, N.Y. – The Manhattan baseball team scored in all but two innings in a crucial MAAC victory in game one of its series against Rider, 12-6, at Clover Stadium.
Games two and three of the series are set for a doubleheader tomorrow at 10 am from the campus of SUNY Purchase.
With the win, Manhattan gained a crucial game on Mount St Mary's in the standings, who took a loss to Niagara earlier in the day.
Manhattan grabbed the lead in the first and never gave it back. Utilizing a pair of runs that were delivered by a pair of singles from
Pete Durocher and
Daniel Perez to take a 2-1 lead.
Jack Lynch delivered a two-RBI single in the following inning to extend the lead to 4-1. In the third, it was
Frankie Marinelli's turn to generate some offense, using another single to bring one more run across, making the score 5-1.
The fourth inning was Rider's turn to score. A trio of one RBI singles brought the Broncs within one run, 5-4.
Trevor Santos returned the favor in the home half of the inning, driving in a pair of runs on yet another single to get the lead back up to three runs, 7-4.
Those two runs were gotten back by the Broncs in the fifth to get back within one, 7-6. Over the next two innings, Manhattan would score five runs which was capped off by Santos clearing the right field short porch for the fourth time this season to make the score 12-6.
Every Jasper who recorded a plate appearance reached base safely at least once this afternoon. Durocher stayed hot in the box, recording three hits and three RBI. Marinelli connected for four hits on the day and drove in a pair of runs.
