FAIRFIELD, Conn. —The Manhattan and Fairfield baseball teams found themselves in a slugfest Saturday afternoon on the campus of Fairfield. Behind an eighth-inning two-run home run by
Daniel Perez, the Jaspers came away with a 14-10 win.
Manhattan (9-21, 3-3 MAAC) will now turn its attention to LIU, whom the Jaspers will welcome to Clover Stadium at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The game will also be broadcast on
ESPN3.
The slugfest was kicked off by the Jaspers, who erupted in the second inning for a season-high nine runs in a single inning. A
Trevor Hansen single kicked it off to right. The next man up,
Jacob Radziewicz, hit a ground ball single right up the middle to move Hansen 90 feet. Both runners moved over one base on a passed ball, and both came around on a fielder's choice by
Ryan Eaton, with Radziewicz scoring from second thanks to a throwing error by the Stags.
Eaton moved over to second on a
Ryan Ash single and was brought home on a
Frankie Marinelli base hit. Two more runs came across thanks to a base hit by
Pete Durocher to score Marinelli and Ash for the senior's 18th and 19th RBI of the season to make the score 5-0.
Alfredo Delgado cleared the bases with a two-RBI double that he cranked to the left-center gap. The scoring concluded with the Jaspers batting around the order and Hansen smashing a home run off the scoreboard to left field, making the score 9-0 before the Stags made a pitching change and got out of the inning.
Despite being faced with such a deficit, the Stags' offense would come alive later in the game. Three runs came across in the sixth inning and another six in the seventh inning, which was highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Ethan Hibbard, making the score 10-9. The score was deadlocked at 10-10 with an RBI double in the top of the eighth.
With the score tied up, the Jasper bats had to step up again, and they did. Ash drew a leadoff walk and was moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt by Marinelli, bringing up Perez. Perez took a 2-1 pitch to deep right for his sixth long ball of the season, making the score 12-10.
Delgado and
Trevor Santos drew back-to-to walks, and both were brought home as insurance runs by Hansen, making the score 14-10, who finished the day with four RBI.
Every Jasper batter reached base and scored today. While taking a no-decision, Jasper starter
Connor O'Neill fired 88 pitches and 64 for strikes while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.
Trey Packen earned his first collegiate win, while
Garret Garbinski secured the win for his second save of the season.
