RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan picked up its third win in a row with an 11-8 win against Mount Saint Mary's on Wednesday at Gaelic Park.
"We are so proud of how the team played today. We attacked from the first draw and remained a threat on offense and defense. Overall, this team continues to get better each game," said coach Jenna Dingler
Manhattan (6-5, MAAC 2-0) outscored Mount St. Mary's (2-8, MAAC 1-1) 8-3 in the first half of the game. The Jaspers used this five-goal lead to carry themselves to an 11-8 victory over the Mountaineers.
Starting the scoring and tying the game for the Jaspers was Ashley Bonitch, off an assist from Julianna Iovine. The 1-0 lead the Mountaineers held in the first quarter would be the last time they led. The Jaspers scored the ensuing four goals in the quarter and then built that up to an eight-point scoring run by 5:55 in the second quarter.
The Mount began to mount a comeback in the second half, squeezing in two goals before the end of the first half and then four more in the third quarter. The Jaspers broke up the Mountaineer's scoring run with two back-to-back goals. The Mountaineers outscored the Jaspers 4-2 in the third.
However, this late comeback was not enough for the Mountaineers, falling to the Jaspers 11-8 after both teams only scored one goal in the fourth.
For the second game in a row, the Jaspers had a well-balanced offense, with four players scoring two points--Reagan Mullins, Jillian Reiner, Iovine, and Ava Fernandes.
Senior goalkeeper, Ashley Gambardella reached a milestone today, saving the 400th shot of her career late in the fourth quarter.
The Jaspers play again Wednesday, Apr. 5, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and face off against Marist at 4 p.m.
