Jaspers Drop Pair of One-Run Games to Hartford Sunday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Manhattan dropped a pair of one-run contests to Hartford on Sunday. The doubleheader was moved from Saturday due to inclement weather.

Game 1: Hartford 7, Manhattan 6
Manhattan scored three in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead before Hartford scored two in the bottom of the seventh to win.

Kaitlyn Flood tied the game in the seventh with a two-run homer that cleared the fence in left. Lauren Rende scored on the homer after getting hit by a pitch to start the inning. Marika Deemer followed with a double. Megan Hedlund made it 7-6 with an RBI double after a Hartford pitching change.

All the scoring came with no outs for the Jaspers. Hedlund was left stranded at second base when the two Jaspers went down on strikes, and Lindsey Hoag grounded out to end the inning.

Carly Mayhood singled through the left side to tie the game at six with one out. Kelsey Galevich advanced to third on the hit as Mara Sczenienski scored. Galevich scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Manhattan led 2-1 after three innings. Hartford then scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Flood, Deemer, and Hedlund all drove in two runs for the Jaspers. Rende scored three times and went 2-3 at the plate.

For the Hawks, Galevich went 2-4 with two RBI. Nagel finished game one 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Game 2: Hartford 2, Manhattan 1
Game two was more of a pitcher's duel than game one. Only two hitters had multiple hits, Lindsey Hoag for Manhattan and Mara Sczenienski for Hartford.

The Hawks struck in the bottom of the first on a Sczenienski single to left.

Manhattan tied the game in the fourth. Megan Hedlund doubled to left field to bring home Kaitlyn Flood to tie the game.

Sczenienski was involved in the winning run too. The second-base men scored on a groundout from S Nagel.

Marika Deemer went six innings for the Jaspers, allowing eight hits, two earned runs, and striking out three.

The Jaspers return to action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
