RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's basketball team earned a MAAC victory over Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon, 57-44, on senior day at Draddy Gym.
The Jaspers finish the week 2-0 while moving to 9-13 overall and 6-7 in league play. The Peacocks are still on the hunt for that first win of the season, falling to 0-22 and 0-13 in the MAAC.
It was a battle in the first quarter, with Manhattan taking a 17-15 lead into the second quarter thanks to
Jade Blagrove beating the buzzer with a good look from just in-front of the free throw line. Manhattan edged Saint Peter's in the second quarter, 11-7, to take a 28-22 lead into the break.
Manhattan created space in the third quarter, opening the quarter on a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 16, 38-22. In the run,
Petra Juric provided six points while
Dee Dee Davis and
Brazil Harvey-Carr each provided two.
"..valuing the basketball. I think we had 15 turnovers halftime. I thought we getting sloppy. Maybe had a few extra jitters being senior day," added head coach
Heather Vulin post game. "[In the second half] I asked them to be more mature and play our style of basketball. They started the third quarter really strong and everyone that came, made an impact in the second half."
"It's been a long four years and I'm very grateful for the time I've had here," said senior
Emily LaPointe. "It's nice to be recognized on this special day because I've put a lot of work into these four years and it hasn't been the easiest. I'm grateful for my teammates, their a great group of girls and their my sisters forever."
The Green and White used an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to push the lead over the 20-point mark, 52-30. While Saint Peter's would chip the lead down, they would never threaten the Jaspers advantage.
"Defensively, they got after it but I thought they were efficient on offense. Petra got some great looks underneath. I thought the execution was really good," added Vulin.
Much like against Fairfield on Thursday, Vulin got a balanced offensive attack from her squad. Davis finished with a game-high 14 points while stuffing the stat sheet in other areas, hauling in seven rebounds to pace all players while dishing out four assists and three thefts. Juric dropped 12 points while Blagrove provided 10 points and three steals.
As a team, the Jaspers outrebounded the Peacocks 44-28, 20-7 on the offensive glass, while only missing two from the charity stripe, 15-17.
Manhattan hits the road next Thursday, traveling to Loudonville for a meeting with Siena. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
