RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan closed the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a split of a doubleheader with Saint Peter's on Thursday.
Game 1: Saint Peter's 5, Manhattan 4
The Jaspers and Peacocks were tied at two, heading into the seventh inning. Then the two sides scored five in the final stanza.
The inning started with a fielder's choice sandwiched around two singles to put runners at the corners for Saint Peter's.
Saint Peter's broke the tie when Olyvia Smith singled up the middle. Aubrey Ketchum then scored on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-2 ballgame. The inning's final run came on a Dakota Pitts sacrifice fly to left.
Marika Deemer led off the inning for Manhattan with a ground-rule double to left-center.
Megan Hedlund followed with her team-leading eighth homer of the season to make it a 5-4 game. Those two hits started the inning, and the Jaspers were retired in order after Hedlund's blast.
The Jaspers' other two runs in the game also came via the home run. Annie gave Manhattan a 2-1 lead in the third with her seventh of the season.
Jessie Rising pitched a complete for the Jaspers, allowing all five runs. Nicole Antuna picked up the win for the Peacocks after tossing five innings.
Game 2: Manhattan 7, Saint Peter's 4
After one, Manhattan fell behind 1-0 before scoring four in the second to take the lead for good in game two.
Gabriella Mazzotta drove in two in the second to start the scoring. Mazzotta and
Megan Gillooley scored later in the inning on a single from Moore.
Gillooley added insurance for the Jaspers in the sixth. The senior blasted a three-run home run to left-center that left little doubt if it would clear the fence. The center fielder's third of the season gave Manhattan a 7-2 lead.
Saint Peter's would make it interesting in the seventh. The Peacocks sent seven to the plate and scored twice to make it 7-4. Pitts had an RBI single with two away to bring home the fourth run. Deemer was able to retire the next batter and strand two runners aboard to preserve the win for the Jaspers.
Deemer picked up her second win of the season in the complete-game effort.
The Jaspers are scheduled to close to the 2022 regular season on Saturday at Fairfield. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
