POMONA, N.Y. – Manhattan dropped the series finale to Fairfield 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Clover Stadium. The Jaspers were unable to avoid being swept as they dropped their first MAAC series of the season in four tries.
Fairfield's (19-14, 9-3 MAAC) Matt Venuto opened the scoring with a solo home run off
Kyle Lesler with one out in the second inning. One inning later, the Stags extended their lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by Matt Zaffino, which scored Becchetti from second and Pagliarini from first.
The rest of the visitors' runs came in the third, with Mike Caruso homering to left field to lead off the frame before Colin Kelly delivered a home run over the fence in right-center. Three of Fairfield's five runs were manufactured by solo home runs.
Manhattan (15-17, 6-6) recorded five hits on the afternoon and scored their first run in the fifth inning when
Jack Lynch homered to right-center. The Jaspers would tack on one more in the seventh, on an RBI single by
Matt Padre, following
David Bermudez's double.
John Farley pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief after replacing Manhattan starting pitcher Lesler in the sixth inning.
Michael Sansone secured the win for the Stags going five innings and allowing one run.
Manhattan will travel to Stony Brook (15-16) on Wednesday, April 20, with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
