JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Manhattan took two of the first three sets before Saint Peter's took the final two to edge the Jaspers 3-2 in Jersey City on Wednesday night.
Manhattan (1-20, 1-10 MAAC) got 44 kills combined from
Camila Gomez and
Julia Menocal, but Saint Peter's (1-23, 1-10 MAAC) hit .250 in sets four and five to come back for the win.
Menocal had six kills, and Gomez had five in the first set for the Jaspers. Manhattan trailed early in set one before
Teresa Garza recorded an ace to tie the set at 13. The Jaspers would lead until 25-24, when the Peacocks benefited from an attack error. Menocal tied the game at 26 with a kill, then Gomez added one before Menocal ended the set with an ace.
Manhattan led early in set two, 6-2, after a
Kelly Markowski kill. Saint Peter's would rally to tie the set at 9-9 before taking a 10-9 lead thanks to a Morgan Thurlow kill. Manhattan would tie the set at 11, 12, 14, 15, and 16-all before Saint Peter's scored nine of the next 13 points to take the set, 25-20.
Set three was the best offensive set of the night for the Jaspers, hitting .406. Gomez and Menocal had six kills each, and the Jaspers only had one attack error.
Sarah Emmons had 11 of her 23 assists on the night in the set. Manhattan did find themselves trailing 12-7 before coming back to level the stanza at 15. From there, the Jaspers scored 10 of the following 15 points to win set three, 25-21, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Saint Peter's, who had hit over .300 in sets two and three, hit .250 over the final two sets but limited the Jaspers to .194 in set four and -.042 in set five to take the last two sets. The Peacocks trailed 13-7 in set four before coming back to win, 25-20, and did not trail in the decisive set five, winning 15-10
Julieanne McKee had 20 assists for the Jaspers too. It is the second straight match with 20-plus assists for McKee and the fourth time this year that Emmons has posted at least 20 helpers. Gomez's 23 kills are a season-high and fourth straight game of at least 14 kills.
Manhattan returns to Draddy Gymnasium this weekend for a pair of MAAC contests. First up is Siena on Saturday at 3 p.m.
