RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan fell to Siena Saturday in a 3-0 sweep at home on Saturday afternoon inside Draddy Gymnasium.
In the first set against the Saints, Manhattan took an early lead and maintained it until the Saints went on a five-point run, kicked off by a kill by Hailey Hinkel to lead 18-16. The run was interrupted by a service error that pushed Manhattan on a three-point run of its own. During the three-point run,
Teresa Garza scored a service ace, followed by a kill by
Julia Menocal, assisted by
Julieanne McKee. Manhattan lost the lead again but rallied at the end to close the gap and finish the set at 25-23.
In the second set, Manhattan again took an early lead, holding it until 11-10. Manhattan again lost the lead to the Saints due to a long run by Siena, this time a six-point run kicked off by a kill from Ece Emrullah. After the run, Siena was up 16-11, broken up by a kill by
Camila Gomez.
Siena got out to an early lead in set three before the Jaspers got to within one, 9-8, after a service error by Siena. The Jaspers then took the lead, 12-10, after putting together four straight points featuring a kill from Gomez and an ace from Garza. Siena would come back to retake the lead and not let it go, this time en route to a 25-19 set win to close out the match.
The offensive leaders for Manhattan were Gomez and Menocal, with 16 and 10 kills each. Garza registered three aces for Manhattan, tying the Saints in aces. McKee set a new season-high in assists again by one with 26.
Sophia Lotto had 14 digs on defense, followed by Gomez and Garza with 10 each.
"I think the team fought well and knew they gave it their all. Tomorrow will be a tougher match because Marist is a more difficult matchup, but in the MACC, who knows, anyone can beat anyone," said head coach
