Manhattan Posts Thrilling Sweep Of Monmouth

Manhattan took both ends from MAAC preseason favorite Monmouth by scores of 2-1 and 7-5 (9) at the MU Softball Field.

Shore native Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ / Middletown North) set the tone for the day with a leadoff double en route to finishing up 6-for-9, highlighted by a five-hit performance in the nightcap.

The Jaspers are now 10-6, while the Hawks fall to 7-3.

Game Two
* Senior Daniella Chiorazzi (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) drilled a two-out, two-run double to lift Manhattan to a 7-5 win over Monmouth in nine innings in the nightcap.

* Graduate student Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) proceeded to leave the bases loaded in the bottom part of the ninth to preserve the victory.

* Williams was the reason the Jaspers were able to win in extras, as the Nutmeg State native struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning with the winning run just 90 feet from home.

* Manhattan jumped out to a 5-0 inning through two after scoring three in the first and two in the second.

* The Jasper struck quickly in the first inning with three runs on five hits as junior Annie Moore (Northridge, CA / El Camino Real) opened the scoring with a RBI single, before juniior Jessie Rising (Little Egg Harbor, NJ / Pinelands) delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap the scoring.

* The next inning, the Green & White again delivered with two outs as Gebhardt pushed the lead out to 5-0 with two-run triple.

* Monmouth would rally to tie the game up at 5-5 in the sixth inning.

* Gebhardt went 5-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and a run to pace a 14-hit attack, while Rising was 3-for-4 with two RBI.

* Williams (3-1) struck out six over 3.2 innings of two-hit ball in earning the win.

Game One
* Fueled by the arm of Rising, Manhattan took the opener by a 2-1 count.

* Rising struck out eight, while yielding one run on four hits and two walks over 7.0 dominating innings.

* She saved her best for last in stranding the tying run 90 feet from home to end the game.

* Rising retired the first nine batters she face and registered four perfect frames in improving to 3-2 on the year.

* Manhattan struck first with an unearned run in the second inning, as Flood reached on a fielding error before scoring on a field error later in the frame.

* The Jaspers would extend the lead out to 2-0 in the top of the seventh as sophomore Kaitlyn Flood ((Southbury, CT / Pomperaug) led off with an infield single, before advancing to second on a bunt single off the bat of Rising ,and would come in to score on pinch-hitter Marika Deemer's (So., Perrysburg, OH / Perrysburg) RBI single.

* Monmouth would get one run back in bottom part of the frame, only to be denied when Rising ended the game with a punchout of Julia Thuer.

* The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1:15 pm.
