New Rochelle, NY – After 101 minutes of scoreless action, junior
Ryan Shields (Standish, Wigan, England / Standish Community) scored his first of the season to give Manhattan a 1-0 double overtime win over Iona in the Jaspers' MAAC opener.
The Jaspers sit at 1-0-0 in the MAAC and 4-4-0 overall, while Iona stumbles to 0-1-0 in conference and 1-3-2 in 2017.
Both teams had trouble generating offensive chances. Manhattan almost had a chance in the fourth minute when sophomore
Noah Amissah (London, England / Orleans Park) couldn't catch up to lead pass inside the 18-yard box. In the 27th minute, junior
Callum Carsley (Birmingham, England / Princethorpe College) took a direct kick 20 yards out and struck the crossbar.
Neither goalkeeper registered a save in the first half. The Gaels' Kellar Sirstins tallied his first save in the 77th minute, shutting down freshman
Brandon Joseph-Buadi (Shoreham-by-Sea, England / Woodard). Sophomore
Marcellin Gohier (Pouance, France / CENS) notched his first one in the 81st minute when Iona's Matias Correa sent the ball into Goheir's chest.
The first overtime period was quiet until four minutes in, when Joseph-Buadi had a lane towards the net. He could not link with Amissah on the cross and the game remained scoreless after 100 minutes.
The second extra frame began with an offsides call against the Gaels. On the ensuing possession, Carsley broke down the left sideline and attempted a cross. Sirstins came out of net and punched the ball out directly to Shields. The midfielder buried the rebound for the game-winner.

- The win was Manhattan's first on the road since a 5-0 victory at Niagara on November 1, 2014.
