The loss spoiled a brilliant effort from
Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Monsignor Farrell) as the freshman lefty struck out six, yielding a single unearned run on one hit while facing just two over the minimum in his 6.0 innings of work.
In defeat, the Jaspers fall to 5-14 while the Pride improves to 6-11.
Manhattan opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Senior
Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) led off with a double before sophomore
Matt Forlow (
Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) moved him to third on a successful sacrifice bunt. On the play Hofstra starting pitcher Brian MacDonald threw wide of first allowing McClennan to score the first run and Forlow to advance to third. Two batters later, Forlow would come around to score on Junior
Christian Santisteban's (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) second hit of the game in pushing the lead out to 2-0. However, the damage could have been greater as the Jaspers squandered a one-out, runner on third situation.
The Pride would get one of those runs back in the bottom part of the frame with a two-out rally. Chris Hardardt singled to Cosgrove before moving to second on a throwing error and would ultimately come around to score on another throwing error to slice the lead in half at 2-1.
In the fourth, the Jaspers loaded the bases before coming away empty-handed and followed that up by hitting into inning-ending double plays in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cosgrove, meanwhile, set aside all nine batters he faced over his three final innings of work. All told, the rookie hurler got five of his final nine outs by strikeout and worked five perfect frames.
Once Cosgrove exited Hofstra made its move in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, on the aid of two errors and went ahead on Ryan Donovan's two-run bloop single that landed just behind the mound.
Manhattan was then set aside in order in the eighth and ninth innings in dropping their second-straight game.
The Jaspers rapped out eight hits and were led by McClennan and Santisteban, each of whom notched two hits.
Manhattan limited the Pride to just four hits as freshman LHP
Steve Arntsen (
Manorville, N.Y. (Eastport-South Manor) was the tough-luck losing pitcher.
Brendan Mulligan earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief while Chris Weiss notched his first save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.
The Jaspers return to action this weekend with a three-game series at Monmouth. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. with all three games to be streamed live on
ESPN3.
