NEW HAVEN, CT – Two days after putting up 80 points against Brown, the Manhattan College women's basketball team couldn't get anything going offensively on Tuesday night. Yale (5-3) scored the first six points of the game and never looked back en route to a 62-36 victory over the Jaspers (2-4) at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Yale led 12-2 midway through the first quarter and held a 23-5 advantage with 1:38 remaining in the period. Taylor Williams (Windsor, CT) hit a three on the other end to bring the Jaspers within 15, but the Bulldogs led 25-10 after the stanza. After a Williams jumper and four Blake Underhill (Edgewater, NJ) free throws cut Manhattan's deficit to nine, 25-16, early in the second quarter, Yale went on an 11-0 run to go up 37-16. The Jaspers responded with a 7-0 spurt to pull within 37-23 at halftime.
The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 49-25 after three quarters, and the margin reached a game-high 29 points at 61-32 with 1:23 remaining. Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) hit two free throws and a layup late to make the final score 62-36 in favor of Yale.
Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY) was the only Jasper in double-figures with 12 points. Grimme finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds, while Williams added six points. Manhattan was held to just 20.8 percent (10-of-48) shooting and committed 33 turnovers, which led to 26 Yale points. The Jaspers went 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) from three-point land and 15-for-25 (60 percent) at the free throw line.
For Yale, Nyasha Sarju led the way with 12 points and seven rebounds. Meghan McIntyre contributed 10 points and six assists, while Tamara Simpson tallied 10 points, six boards and six steals. Katie Werner also grabbed six rebounds, as the Bulldogs outrebounded the Jaspers 42-34. Yale shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from long range, and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) at the charity stripe.
On Friday night, the Jaspers (0-0 MAAC) begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play by hosting Niagara (1-4, 0-0 MAAC) at 7 p.m. The Purple Eagles won all three meetings between the squads last season, including a 57-51 decision in the first round of the MAAC Tournament.
NOTES: It was the ninth meeting between the teams, but the first since Dec. 5, 1987…Yale leads the all-time series 5-4…Manhattan used a different starting lineup for the fifth straight game, with Tatum returning to the starting five after coming off the bench against Brown…The contest marked the start of a span where Manhattan plays seven out of nine on the road…Tatum has led the Jaspers in scoring four times in six games this season…Manhattan Assistant Coach Brandon Gade was an assistant at Yale last season.
