LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Manhattan men's soccer team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) battle to Rider, 3-1, at Ben Cohen Field on Saturday afternoon. All four goals in the match were scored in the final 45 minutes of play, as the Broncs improved to 9-4-1 overall, and 4-2-1 against league opponents. The Jaspers fell to 2-8-1, including 2-4 in MAAC play.
Rider senior Florian Valot opened the scoring on the afternoon when he found the back of the net in the 59th minute. Valot played off a nice combo with sophomore Jose Aguinaga and was able to finish to give the Broncs a 1-0 edge with just over a half hour to play.
Manhattan responded in the 76th minute when senior co-captain Alex Shackley (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde) finished from close range following a cross from sophomore Troy Carrington (Verona, N.J. / Syracuse). Shackley's goal marked his second in three games and leveled the score at one.
Just under six minutes later, Aguinaga put Rider back on top when he headed one past Jaspers' freshman goalkeeper R.J. Noll (Yelm, Wash. / Yelm) after a nice cross by junior Rob Nardiello.
In the 86th minute, junior Christian Flath struck from 18 yards to provide the Broncs with a 3-1 lead and put the game out of reach. Flath's blast came off a rebound near the top of the box.
The goals for Valot, Aguinaga and Flath marked each player's fifth score of the 2015 campaign.
Noll made four saves in the contest.
The Jaspers will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they host Monmouth for a 7 p.m. bout at Gaelic Park.
