RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Behind Tommy Cardona's five-hit shutout, NYIT notched a 13-0 victory over the Manhattan College baseball team at Van Cortlandt Park on Tuesday afternoon.
When these teams met at Brooklyn's MCU Park on March 12, it was cold, windy and rainy throughout. The conditions were vastly different on Tuesday. There was a light drizzle during the middle innings, but the rain passed after about 45 minutes on an otherwise pleasant afternoon.
After tallying single runs in the first and third innings, NYIT extended its lead to 6-0 by playing a little small ball in the fourth. The Bears converted three singles, three sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly and an error into a four-spot during the rally.
Manhattan's best scoring chance came in the fifth. Evan Brown led off the inning with a double, and the Jaspers eventually loaded the bases with two outs. However, Cardona retired Chris Kalousdian on a popup to first to end the inning. Manhattan loaded the bases with two out again in the sixth, but Cardona again got out of trouble when Mikey Miranda flied to center.
NYIT added a pair of runs in the seventh, then rallied for five more in the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Cardona allowed a one-out single to Miranda before completing his shutout by inducing a pair of fly balls to left.
Michael Martin got the start on the mound and went four innings. He allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Chris Liquori and Mike Vocatura each tossed two innings of relief, while Casey Meyers and Sean Abbate pitched the ninth for Manhattan. Kalousdian, Joe McClennan and Elias Monsalve recorded base hits to go along with Miranda's single and Brown's double.
Frank Sanacore finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for NYIT. Joe Daru went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Joshua Canabal was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Nick Sebastian added two hits and three RBIs, and Anthony Martelli scored twice for the Bears. Cardona struck out three and walked six.
The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, April 23 when they visit Albany at 3 p.m.
