SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Joey Rocchietti pitched eight superb innings but Seton Hall ace Josh Prevost was a little bit better, improving his record to 5-0 as the Pirates defeated the Jaspers 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
Seton Hall got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning, after the Pirates put their first two runners on the corners. Kyle Grimm's sacrifice fly to center field scored Zack Weigel but Rocchietti was able to limit the damage with an inning-ending double play.
Manhattan got a leadoff double by Christian Santisteban in the second and a single by Chris Kalousdian to start the fourth, but did not score. The Jaspers' best opportunity came in the fifth, after Evan Brown slammed the first pitch he saw for a triple to right field with one out.
Vin Teixeira followed with a ground ball to third and Brown got erased trying to score the tying run at the plate. The Jaspers continued to battle during the frame, ultimately loading the bases with two outs, but Prevost was able to wiggle out of the jam and leave the bases filled.
Prevost retired the final 13 batters he faced as Seton Hall's single runs in the first and seventh innings held up for the win.
Manhattan and Seton Hall meet again in the middle game of the series on Saturday, March 15 at 4:15 p.m.
