Bartoah Nets Late Equalizer as Jaspers Grab MAAC Point at Quinnipiac

Box Score

Hamden, Conn. - Courtesy of a 78th minute goal by junior Abraham Bartoah, which leveled the score at 1, the Manhattan men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Wednesday night.

With the result, the Jaspers move to 1-9-2 overall, including 0-5-1 in conference play. The Bobcats remain unbeaten in MAAC contests, with a 6-4-4 overall mark, and a 3-0-3 record against league opponents.

Manhattan's goal came off a corner kick, when senior Reese Akers swung a ball into the box. Sophomore Brandon Alvarado leapt up and headed the ball goalward, forcing Quinnipiac senior goalkeeper Borja Angoitia to make a save. The rebound came out to Bartoah, who smashed the ball into the top of the net from close range to tie the score at 1.

With three minutes remaining in the second overtime, controversy arose on a call in front of the Quinnipiac goal. Sophomore forward Daniel Laguna Kennedy blasted a shot from within six yards that hit Angoitia in the face and landed at the feet of Manhattan freshman center back Luke Greaves. Greaves slotted the ball into goal, but the official whistled for a Manhattan foul after seeing contact made with the keeper's face. The goal was disallowed.

The Bobcats barely allowed time for their home fans to get situated before netting their lone goal of the match. Quinnipiac earned a corner kick in the 2nd minute that sophomore midfielder James Doig stepped up to take. His ball found senior forward and leading scorer on the squad, Machel Baker, who provided an early finish to put the home side up a goal in the opening minutes.

For the Jaspers, senior Eugene Heerschap and Laguna Kennedy had multiple scoring opportunities, but couldn't connect. Heerschap had three chances in regulation, two of which were saved by Angoitia. His final scoring attempt came with just seconds remaining in the second half, when he saw his effort sail over the bar.

Laguna Kennedy had two chances to provide the Jaspers with the golden goal in the second period of extra time, but had both of his kicks stopped by Angoitia.

Seniors Tommy Amos and Andrew Santos also had opportunities to score in overtime, but Santos' kick was saved, and Amos' attempt carried wide.

Both goalkeepers played well in the match. Jaspers sophomore Alex Coates McDowall recorded six saves, while Angoitia stopped seven shots.

Five yellow cards were issued in the contest (three to Manhattan and two to Quinnipiac).

Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, when the squad hosts Canisius for a 7 p.m. meeting at Gaelic Park.
