Box Score
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan could not figure out High Point starter Matt Armstead who pitched a complete game shutout as the Jaspers fell 5-0 at Williard Stadium on Saturday in North Carolina. Junior centerfielder Anthony Vega was responsible for both of Manhattan's hits as High Point (10-7) rallied behind Armstead's eight strikeout performance to take the second straight contest against the Jaspers.
Manhattan (1-10) worked Armstead for two walks in the first three batters of the game, but he bounced back and struck out the final two Jaspers of the inning to eliminate the scoring threat. Armstead retired all three batters faced in the top of the second inning, before the Panthers gave him a three run cushion in the bottom of the frame which proved to be more than enough offensive support.
High Point junior Willie Medina capped the second inning with a RBI single through the left side to put the Panthers on top 3-0. It was his second hit of a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. Medina scored the Panthers' fourth run in the fifth inning on a fielding error, and then in the seventh inning Ryan Retz drove in Medina for the fifth run with a sacrifice fly.
Jaspers' senior starter Mike Giordano pitched six innings and yielded four earn runs with a strikeout. He turned the ball over to senior reliever Taylor Sewitt in the seventh inning who allowed only one hit in the final two frames.
Manhattan looks to bounce back on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the third and final contest of the series with High Point.
