Late Goals Cost Manhattan In 2-1 Loss

Box Score

Riverdale, N.Y. - Lucas Pilar da Silva scored his first collegiate goal early in the second half to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead but the Jaspers could not hold on as they fell 2-1 to the St. Francis (NY) Terriers at Gaelic Park on Friday afternoon.

The goal was the first of the year for the Manhattan Jaspers squad and came off of a corner kick. Sophomore Carlo Giachino launched a ball from the right corner that curved away from the net. Pilar da Silva was able to find a solid touch and put it in the back of the net to take the lead in the 55th minute.

The Terriers upped their aggressive play and began putting extra pressure on the Jaspers. In the 75th minute, Gabriel Bagot found the equalizer off a free kick from Jonas Pantelidis that floated over the Manhattan wall.

With the score knotted at 1-1, both teams continued to find chances but it was St. Francis coming away with the victory when, in the 87th minute, James Caicedo beat the defense and fed a perfect pass in face of goal that was an easy tap in for Bagot.

It was one of the more aggressive offensive games this season for the Jaspers as they registered 15 total shots as well as five corner kicks. St. Francis however took 20 shots and had nine corners in the contest.

The game was chippy all throughout with numerous fouls for both squads. Mahattan's CJ Dragovich and Caicedo were both issued yellow cards in the 65th minute to help quell the physical play.

George Ellis, who started the contest in goal, was perfect in his 45 minutes played with two saves. Sophomore Christopher Lands came in in the second half and gave the up the two deciding goals.

That Jaspers (0-5-0) will return to action on Fri., Sept. 23 when they travel to Teaneck, N.J. to take on Fairleigh Dickinson University.
