Fairfield, Conn. -- Fairfield University's Jack Burridge scored a pair of goals and added two assists as Fairfield men's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Manhattan College in a match played Sunday at Fairfield.
The Jaspers were able to hold off a great deal of pressure during the game's first half hour, with Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Christopher Todd turning away the Stags with a few key saves that kept the game scoreless until the 34th minute. At that point, Fairfield's Burridge took advantage of a misplayed clear attempt by the Jaspers, and hit a shot to the far corner from three yards away for a 1-0 lead.
Burridge scored the team's second goal as Victor Harris started the opportunity with a cross from the left post to right post where Burridge was waiting to volley in a shot that went low corner to give Fairfield a 2-0 advantage.
Fairfield (now 7-5-1 overall and 3-1-1- in the MAAC) added one more goal before the first half ended when Michael Eagar took control of the ball 35 yards from goal, brought the ball into the box and sent a ball to the left side of the penalty box where Tucker Nathans secured the ball and drilled a shot to far corner for a 3-0 Fairfield advantage.
The second half found Fairfield's Erik Ilisije scoring the next two goals, in whcih Burridge played a role both times. On the first of Ilisije's goals, Burridge held the ball away from his defender before spinning free and sending a ball to the middle of the box.
Ilisije sent the ball into an empty goal for a 4-0 Stags advantage. Ilisije ended the scoring when Kwadwo Asante crossed the ball from left side to the middle of the box. Burridge flicked the ball off the side of his foot to Ilisije who finished the play with a shot to the upper right corner.
Fairfield outshot Manhattan by a 21-3 count. Todd and Randall Brobson combined for seven saves in the Manhattan goal.
Manhattan (now 1-14-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the MAAC) returns to action Saturday when they host Saint Peter's College at 2 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
