FAIRFIELD, CONN. ? Mike McCann and Ryan Masters each tallied five hits, a double and combined for five RBIs helping the Manhattan College baseball team reach the 30-win plateau with a doubleheader sweep of Fairfield (14-35, 11-12) this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Jaspers won 10-3 and 8-2 pulling into a tie with Canisius for first place in the MAAC with just one regular-season game remaining. Senior outfielder Eric Nieto notched two hits over the doubleheader to advance into third place on the program's career hit chart (213) surpassing Nick Derba '07.

Jaspers' freshmen McCann and Anthony Armenio homered in game one as Manhattan coasted to a 10-3 victory. McCann and Masters each tallied two hits in the ball game.

Manhattan (30-18-1, 18-5) starter Tom Costigan spun six solid innings leading to his fifth win of the season. Jaspers' freshman Kyle Waddell picked up his first save of the year as he allowed just four hits tossing the final three innings of the ballgame.

Dom Lombardi got the Jaspers going early with a RBI single in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. Kevin Nieto scored on the play. Nieto successfully stole three bases in the contest improving to a perfect 20-for-20 on the season, a team-high.

Fairfield responded by rallying for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and second innings courtesy of RBI singles from Jason Rago and Albie DeSimone to even the game at 2-2.

In the top of the fourth, Masters helped Manhattan regain its advantage with an RBI single of his own to right field sending McCann across home plate. The Jaspers built on their 3-2 lead by posting seven more runs over the last five innings to secure the victory.

In game two, Ruben Perez broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning with a 415 foot bomb over the center field wall. Lombardi followed with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score McCann giving the Jaspers a 3-1 edge.

McCann went 3-for-4 from the plate, scored two runs and drove in an RBI.

The Jaspers put the game out of reach with a five run sixth inning. Masters began the surge when he smoked a two RBI double. McCann knocked Masters in with a hard hit single, before Salem crushed his ninth home run of the season over the left field wall.

Manhattan preserved its 8-2 advantage over the final two innings and held on for its ninth straight win.

Sophomore left-hander Mike Gazzola twirled six innings, allowed just five hits and struck out five for the win. Tom Moran wrapped up the contest as he retired the final three batters of the ballgame.

Manhattan finishes the regular-season tomorrow for its final contest at Fairfield. Game time has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to an inclement weather forecast.
