Riverdale, N.Y. (April 6, 2008) ? The Manhattan College Softball team fell in their 2008 home opener to Niagara University, losing 8-6 in 8 innings in the first game followed by an 8-1 loss in the second. The Lady Jaspers offense was sparked by 2-3, 2 RBI performance by Kristina Walraven in the first game.
At the start of the game, the Lady Jaspers fell behind after Niagara scored first in the top of the second to make it a 1-0 game. But Manhattan came right back, as Walraven hit a double to drive in the tying run. The next inning, the Lady J's put up five runs where the ladies were on their toes. Going into the seventh with a 6-1 lead, the Purple Eagles fought back and mounted a comeback as they put up five runs of their own in the top of the seventh. The regulation inning finished in a tie and going into the eighth the Lady J's knew they needed a defensive stop. But Niagara put up two runs in the top of the eighth and went on to win that game in extra innings.
In the second game, Niagara struck first once again, as two runs in the top of the second made it a 2-0 nothing game. The Purple Eagles would tack on one more run before Amanda Genovese hit a ground ball that allowed Danielle Just to score. But the Lady Jaspers could not get any closer as Niagara five runs in the top of the seventh once again and put the game out of reach.
Walraven finished the day 3-7 with two RBI's. Amanda Genovese drove in the only run in the second game, as she drove in 2 RBI's on the day.
The Lady Jaspers will return to action tomorrow, Monday, April 7 as they will play their rescheduled game against Canisius College. The doubleheader is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
