Charleston, S.C (February 18, 2007)?On day two of the Cougar Classic, the softball team's season opening tournament, the Lady Jaspers dropped a 6-1 decision to the University of North Florida and fell to James Madison 4-3 in eight innings.
In the first game against North Florida, the Ospreys' Tori Ahern and Devyn Findley gave North Florida a strong pitching performance, throwing a combined two-hitter. Ahren picked up the win, allowing one run and striking out five in five innings of work. Manhattan's run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Preseason All-MAAC selection Danielle Just hit a solo homerun .
In game two against James Madison, the Lady Jaspers trailed 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, but tied the score on Lyndzie Phillips' two-run single which brought in Liz Strein and Just.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Manhattan took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on a bunt by Strein which brought home Kara Cokeley. In the bottom of the eighth, James Madison tied the game at 3-3 on a Brittney Dyson sacrifice fly. The Dukes then scored the winning run when Katie George hit a double to centerfield, scoring Chel'sea Ryan and giving James Madison a 4-3 win.
Manhattan finishes up the Cougar Classic this afternoon when they take on North Dakota State at 9:00 a.m. and the College of Charleston at 11:30 a.m.
