Hempstead, N.Y. (March 19, 2006)- Manhattan took a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh, but could not hold off Seton Hall, dropping a 6-5 decision this morning at the Hofstra Invitational at the HU Softball Stadium.
The Lady Jaspers jumped out of the gate early, scoring twice in the top of the first on a two run blast off the bat of
Kiera Fox.
The Pirates would answer back in the bottom of the frame, scoring two on a two-RBI double, before taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double.
Fox would again come up with a big hit for Manhattan, connecting on a two-RBI single in the top of the fifth, giving the Lady Jaspers a 4-3 lead.
Seton Hall would answer in the bottom of the frame with a solo homer, setting up an eventful seventh.
In the top of the seventh,
Liz Strein led off the inning with single and came around to score later in the inning on a throwing error by the Seton Hall pitcher.
Seton Hall rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jenna Best had a pinch hit double with two outs and Akoua Lonergan followed with a single up the middle for the Pirates. Center fielder
Stefanie Gozdziewski came up throwing and there was a collision at the plate between Best and catcher Strein before the ball arrived. The ball got through to the backstop, and Lonergan went to third. Pitcher Jill Madea backed up the play and threw the ball wildly to third base, allowing Lonergan to come home.
Strein went 2-3 with two runs scored, and Fox went 2-2 with 4 RBI and two walks to pace the Manahattan offense.
Medea hurled 6.2 innings for the Lady Jaspers, striking out three.
