MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO SIENA IN OVERTIME, 1-0

Loudonville, N.Y. (October 6, 2006)- For the second straight meeting, Manhattan and Siena played into overtime, but unlike last season's 0-0 draw, the Jaspers were unable to keep the Saints out of the net in overtime, dropping a 1-0 decision this afternoon at Siena Field.

Just 1:56 into the overtime, Ross Cardinell scored the game-winner off a pass from Delmiro Fernandez.

Manhattan generated the game's first scoring chance, as David Mires' shot in the 10th minute was saved by Siena goalkeeper Patrick Henry.

The Saints rebounded with two scoring opportunities of their own, forcing Jasper netminder John Ciano to make saves on shots by Brian Woodfield and Rob DiFilippo.

After Henry saved a Tommy Lenhardt shot at the 30:02 mark, Siena almost got on the scoreboard off a corner kick, but Thomas Ciovacco's header was saved by Ciano.

Manhattan put together a flurry at the end of the first half, as both John Dellipriscoli and James Gannon got shots on net in the final 2:30 of the opening stanza, but Henry was up to the task each time, keeping the score deadlocked at the break.

In the early going of the second half, Siena produced the first scoring opportunity, but Ciano was able to save a shot off the foot of Jason Laffin at the 47:18 mark. An Adam Kiley shot, saved by Henry, was sandwiched between another Laffin shot saved by Ciano.

Late in the game, both teams began to press offensively. The Saints' Vito Urbano got a shot on goal at the 87:30 mark that was saved by Ciano, before Manhattan put together a furious rally in the final minute of regulation.

With just 20 seconds remaining, Bryan Knight's shot was blocked by a Siena defender before, with just four ticks left in regulation, Tony Safran blasted a shot on net that Henry was able to keep out of the goal to save the match for Siena and send the game into overtime, setting up Cardinell's goal.

Ciano and Henry each recorded six saves on the day.

Manhattan continues its weekend road trip on Sunday, October 8, facing MAAC foe Marist at 1:00 p.m. in a match that will be played at Vassar College's Prentiss Field.
