MANHATTAN ATHLETES PERFORMED WELL THE FIRST DAY OF THE METROPOLITAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Riverdale, NY (February 7, 2004)-The men's and women's track teams performed well today at the first day of the Metropolitan Championships held at Draddy Gymnasium on the Manhattan College campus. Marina Liander started out the meet on top finishing first in the Weight Throw after her second toss of 17.15m. Michael Freeman then followed Liander's lead earning a first place finish in the men's Weight Throw tossing the weight 19.07m. This is the fifth time that a Freeman has won the Weight Throw at the MET's. Michael's brother Thomas Jacob Freeman has won this title the last four years.

On the men's side, Rajne Svenssohn leads the Heptathlon after the first day. So far he has earned 2971 points. Svenssohn came in first in the Long Jump, Shot Put, and High Jump. Svenssohn and the other athletes will finish the Heptathlon tomorrow at 10am.

Lady Jasper Karin Larsson finished third in the Pentathlon earning 3344 points. Larsson's top event was the Shot Put throwing 12.95m. Her toss was 2.88m further than the second place finisher in the Shot Put. Stephanie Morris finished fifth with 2814 points. Her best performance was in the Long Jump when she leaped 4.84m.

The rest of the Jaspers who qualified for the Metropolitan's will finish up the meet tomorrow at the Armory. The events start at 10am.
