Baseball Posts 6-2 Win in Series Finale; Takes 2 of 3 Against Siena

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY — Manhattan (6-8, 2-1 MAAC) finished the weekend on a sky high note by defeating the Siena Saints (2-11, 1-2 MAAC) by a score of 6-2 on Sunday. Sophomore Joseph Duffield pitched five shutout innings to secure the win while four Jaspers each tallied two hits at the plate.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Jaspers rode the momentum of strong pitching from Duffield and opened up a 3-0 lead in the third.

  • Manhattan scored its run on an RBI single from senior catcher Andreaus Lewis and a two-run single from junior third baseman Trevor Hansen.

  • The right-handed Duffield worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth by retiring Aidan Paradine and Owen Pincince to close out the frame.

  • Manhattan produced a few more insurance runs, starting with a pair of hits from Lewis and Hansen in the eighth and a Sac fly from freshman outfielder Colin Basehore.

  • In the ninth inning, junior outfielder Aidan Taclas brought home Dylan Mayer on a Sac fly.

  • In the bottom of the frame, senior right-handed pitcher Brad Grasser came on in relief of Preston Tamm. Grasser retired the last two Siena hitters via a strikeout and a flyout.

STATS AND NOTES

  • The Jaspers opening series victory is the second time in three years that Manhattan won its first conference series of the season. The Jaspers took two of three from Saint Peter's in 2023.

  • Manhattan sits in third place in the MAAC standings tied with Merrimack.

  • Duffield earned his second win of the season by going five innings with three hits, four strikeouts, four walks and one hit batter.

  • Duffield has recorded nine strikeouts with zero runs given up over his last 8.2 innings pitched.

  • Taclas and Lewis finished the series with six RBIs apiece. Both players each added one RBI on Sunday.

  • The two runs were the lowest amount given up by Manhattan this season.

  • The last time Manhattan had limited the opposition to two runs was last season in a 10-2 win over Siena.

  • Making his third appearance of the season, Tamm pitched 3.1 innings and only allowed two runs (both earned) while striking out a pair of batters.

  • Tamm lowered his era to a team-best 2.03 ERA among those who have pitched at least seven innings this season. The freshman from Indiana has logged 13.3 innings on the mound this season.

  • Manhattan ended the game with nine hits, receiving two each from Taclas, Lewis, Hansen and Tyler Galletti

QUOTES FROM MANHATTAN'

"Great start to MAAC play with a series win," said Manhattan head coach Rosen. "Always tough to take a series on the road. Very proud of the way the guys responded in games two and three to get the wins. We're excited to get back to work at practice this week."

"Joe Duffield gave us an outstanding start today and Preston Tamm followed with some great innings," said Rosen on the Jaspers' pitching work. "Brad Grasser slid into the back end of a game and did his job tremendously…I'm proud of Coach (Will) Hesslink and his work with the staff to set the tone for a series win."

Rosen on the strides with the offense: "The bats did a nice job scoring first in this third game and taking two opportunities to extend the lead late."
