Softball Post Nine in Sixth to Drop UMBC in Tournament Finale

BALTIMORE, MD – The Manhattan Jaspers softball team (3-13, 0-0 MAAC) scored nine runs in the top of the sixth to take down the Retrievers of UMBC (6-18, 0-0 America East) by a score of 9-0 inside "The Diamond at UMBC" on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Fast forward to the sixth inning of the final contest of the UMBC Round Robin #2 Tournament in Baltimore. The Green and White exploded for six runs, starting with a Michayla Rodriguez base knock into right field.
  • Sophia Kiseloski then worked the opposing pitcher in the circle in a five-pitch at-bat, where she won the battle to send a base hit through the left side.
  • Then, Angelina Gencarelli singled up the middle to drive home Rodriguez to give the Jaspers its first and only needed lead.
  • The Jaspers did not take its foot off the gas following the Retrievers' pitching change, as Tajiana Pickett jammed a two-run base knock into left field to give Manhattan a three-run advantage.
  • Later in the inning, Anissa Villalobos reached on fielders-choice, where Jamie Falotico scored on a throwing error by the UMBC first baseman to make it a four-run lead.
  • Finally, with the bases loaded, it was Kiseloski again, who doubled to right center to clear the bases and give the Green and White a whopping nine-run advantage.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Starting pitcher Karissa Spring logged a complete six innings and punched out five batters in 84 total pitches. Spring allowed just two hits for her third victory of the year.
