Baseball Falls at Navy on Tuesday Afternoon

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Jaspers' short trip to the United States Naval Academy resulted in a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Midshipmen. Manhattan received a strong outing from freshman right-handed pitcher Preston Tamm, but the Manhattan bats were mostly silent.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Navy added two runs in the first inning off an RBI single from Victor Izquierdo and a Jaspers' error in the opening frame.

  • Manhattan put two runners on base in the top of the second thanks to a single from Aidan Taclas and a walk from Colin Basehore. Navy right-handed pitcher Kody Clancy proceeded to retire the side to end the Jaspers' threat.

  • Manhattan got on the board in the top of third, with Taclas reaching on an error by the Navy third baseman Evan Brown, allowing Andreaus Lewis to score. Ryan Lordier stopped at third before Basehore struck out in the following at-bat to end the frame.

  • The Jaspers wouldn't reach safely again until the sixth inning on a single from Lordier.

  • In the top of the seventh, Manhattan stranded two runners at second and third after relief pitcher Owen Beisty struck out both Dylan Mayer and Lewis to thwart the Jaspers offense.

  • Cade Udell replaced Tamm on the mound to start the bottom of the seventh. After getting two quick outs, Navy's Ty DePerno homered off Udell to stretch the Navy lead to 3-1.

  • Manhattan cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from pinch hitter Jeremy Sosa.

  • The Midshipmen tacked on four more runs in the eighth on four hits to take a 7-2 lead.

  • Manhattan got two runs back in the ninth on three hits.

  • Lewis and Lordier each recorded RBI singles to cap the scoring.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Tamm hurled six innings of two-run baseball while striking out five Midshipmen.

  • Tamm has faced 33 batters this season and owns a 0.90 ERA.

  • The Jaspers' offense tallied eight hits on Tuesday afternoon led by Lordier's two.

  • Lordier has a team-high nine hits this season with a team-best .375 batting average among Jaspersaveraging at least two plate appearances per game.

  • Redshirt sophomore Chris Fidanza came on in relief in the eighth inning and worked his way out of trouble after allowing two hits.

  • Fidanza hasn't allowed a run in his 2.2 innings of work across two appearances, and has registered four strikeouts.

  • Head coach Steven Rosen worked alongside Navy head coach Chuck Ristano at Notre Dame. Rosen was the Director of Baseball Operations for the Irish while Ristano served as pitching coach for 12 seasons in South Bend.

QUOTES FROM MANHATTAN

Head coach Steven Rosen: "That was a great experience for our boys and although we came out on the losing side it was a high-level competitive college baseball game and something to build on. Excited for a good day of practice tomorrow to keep working on the things we need to prepare for the conference season."

"I want to thank Coach Ristano for having us down at the United States Naval Academy."
