Fernandez and Marcozzi Score for Women’s Lacrosse; Fall to #24 UConn in Storrs

STORRS, CT– The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Lacrosse team (1-3, 0-0 MAAC) fell to the UConn Huskies (3-1, 0-0 Big East) by a score of 19-2 inside Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After trailing by two goals early on, the Jaspers found their footing with a pair of free-position shots from Ashley Bonitch.
  • Following a UConn shot off the post to her right, goalkeeper Danielle Serbinski saved the ensuing shot roughly 20 seconds later to keep the game within two.
  • Later in the first quarter, Bonitch recorded another free-position shot, which the Huskies' Tori Cini saved.
  • In the waning seconds of the opening stanza, Serbinski made another save on UConn to ensure the ball stayed out of the net.
  • Upon UConn's goal to open the second quarter, Maya Metz logged a wide-angle shot off the draw control.
  • Following a UConn foul midway through the second, Olivia Cruthers shoots the ball wide in the first portion of the sequence before Brooke Leonard repossesses and finds Moira Marcozzi for her first of the season.
  • Midway through the third quarter, Manhattan logged a pair of shots in a span of 14 seconds off the sticks of Maher and Leonard.
  • Emily Fiola joined the shooting party with a free-position attempt but was saved by UConn's keeper.
  • In the fourth quarter, off a ground ball pickup by Fiola, Emily Derrico found Ava Fernandez for her second of the season.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Danielle Serbinski logged four saves in 32 minutes of game time. Celeste Endo saw 28 minutes on the turf and logged five saves on the afternoon.
  • As a team, Manhattan logged 17 shots in the 60 minutes of game time. Highlighted by Cruthers, Maher, Bonitch, and Metz's three a piece.
  • Endo and Naomi Aristone each recorded a pair of caused turnovers against UConn.
  • The aforementioned Endo also led the way with three ground-ball pickups for the Jaspers in the non-conference ranked contest.
