Manhattan Drops Double Overtime Battle at Siena

ALBANY, N.Y. — Manhattan led by six, 78-72, with 43 seconds left but Siena battled back to force two overtime periods before pulling out a 103-95 victory on their home court. A Siena three-pointer and basket put the Saints in control late in the second overtime period to spoil a career-high night of 26 points for Devin Dinkins

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Manhattan started off hot from the field, doubling up Siena 26-13 after a three-pointer from Wesley Robinson at the 10:36 mark of the first half.

  • Siena battled back to cut it to four, with a three from Major Freeman cutting the Jaspers lead to 29-25 at the 7:39 mark.

  • Dinkins heated up late in the first half, cashing in two threes that pushed the lead back out to eight. However, the Saints fired back late in the first half with a three from Marcus Jackson and a pair of baskets from Freeman.

  • On the final possession of the first half, Peter Carey cleaned up a second-chance tip-in just before time expired to give the Saints a 43-42 lead at the break.

  • Opening the second half with a 7-0 run, Manhattan punched back to take a 49-43 lead following a finish inside for Gilyard on an assist from Sydnor.

  • Just over three minutes later, the game was tied again on a three from Brendan Coyle. Four more lead changes occurred over the next five plus minutes out of which Siena emerged with a four-point lead on a lay-up from Carey.

  • Manhattan countered with another 7-0 run, which was capped off by a three from Shaquil Bender and gave the Jaspers a 66-63 with 5:33 left.

  • The Jaspers led by six two more times over the final five minutes before unraveling late with a few miscues. With 16 seconds left, Manhattan fouled up two and Freeman's ensuing free throws tied the game to force overtime.

  • Manhattan dug deep with the last two baskets of the first overtime to force the second overtime before being outscored 16-8 over the final five minutes.

STATS AND NOTES

QUOTES FROM MANHATTAN

Gallagher on going the distance with Siena: "Two good programs and two good ball clubs. Overall, for us, we're a program where you can feel the energy…we just need to do smarter things late."

Gallagher: "For us, there are a lot of positives right now and the negatives are very controllable."

Gallagher on the impact of losing Robinson late due to foul trouble: "He's a key, integral part of us. I'll take a look at the film to see how we can use him better in certain situations so that we can keep him in the game."
