Riverdale, N.Y. — Manhattan came away with a resounding 5-0 win over Delaware State on Saturday at Gaelic. From the outset, Jaspers put the pedal to the metal, using a 2nd minute goal from Sami Derrico to set the tone for the offensive outburst.
Derrico wasted no time entering the score sheet, and yet again, did it with style. Her shot from the right side was perfectly placed past Hornets' goalkeeper Katie Knapp and evoked a sense of deja vu after her pair of strikes versus Wagner almost two weeks ago.
Even with possession easily favoring Manhattan, the Jaspers continued to fight to get back on the scoring sheet. After needing a bang bang play from sophomore goalkeeper Molly Brunk to keep the Hornets scoreless, Manhattan added a second goal in the 38th minute when Arancha Antunes delivered a stunning goal from just around the 18 after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder Kaylee Stowell.
Senior forward Amrit Arora closed the first-half scoring with a goal in the 42nd minute. Arora beat her defender off the dribble before unleashing an impeccable strike from inside the box that left no doubt.
The floodgates were officially open.
Derrico added another goal—her fourth of the season—in the 49th minute assisted by Reina Callahan, who checked in for her season debut coming back from injury.
Then, in the 56th minute, senior forward Nicolette Caneda converted her second header of the season on a beautiful cross from senior captain Julia Nicholas. Caneda now has 4 goals in her career.
Manhattan out shot the Hornets 25-3 with a 10-0 advantage for shots on goal. Molly Brunk has not conceded a goal since the 82nd minute at Army back on August 18th.

Coach's Angle
Head coach Brendan Lawler: "We know we can control games and score goals and at the end of the day if you are not giving up balls in areas that create chances for them, we will be in every game."
Lawler on Sami Derrico: "She's been putting in the work for years…She helps us win the ball to immediately start attacking. We're just riding her work ethic."
Next Time Out
Having completed non-conference play at 4-2, Manhattan will turn their attention to next Saturday's MAAC Season Opener at Canisius (1-1-1).
