Manhattan set to battle LIU

Riverdale, N.Y. — Manhattan (0-2) and LIU (0-1) are set to square off on Thursday at noon at LIU Soccer Park. Both teams met last season at Gaelic Park and played to a 0-0 tie.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

-Last Thursday, Manhattan dropped their season opener at Fordham, 2-1. After giving up 2 first-half goals, Manhattan battled hard in the second half and found the back of the net in the 88th minute on a corner kick from senior captain Julia Nicholas. For her career, the Connecticut native has 8 goals while sporting the Kelly Green and White.

-Last time out, Manhattan was defeated 3-0 by Army on the campus of the United States Military Academy. Sunday's match-up with the two-time defending Patriot League Regular Season Champions was leveled at halftime before the Cadets were able to muster 3 second-half goals.

-Manhattan has 3 Long Island natives on the 2024 roster. That would be forward Nicolette Caneda, redshirt sophomore forward Samantha D'Angelo, and redshirt freshman Gianna Fucile

-Redshirt sophomore forward Amaya Hill will start on Thursday at LIU after leaving the action in the second half at Army. Hill has played 115 minutes across the first two games, and came close to striking first at West Point when her shot in the 14th minute was saved by Army goalie Sage Strohman and ricocheted off the crossbar.

-The Jaspers are looking for their first win of the season on Thursday at LIU. Afterwards, they will prepare for Sunday's home opener vs. Wagner at 11 a.m.

-LIU is fresh off a 3-1 loss at Albany. Gina Proviano struck first for the Sharks with a goal in the 20th minute. The Great Danes responded with a trio of goals, including one by Casey Stowell, the sister of Manhattan sophomore midfielder Kaylee Stowell

-LIU went 7-8-2 a season ago and have since started up with new head coach Tom Giovatto, who was the longtime coach for the men's soccer program at St. Francis Brooklyn before most recently serving as an assistant for Fordham men's soccer. Giovatto won two NEC Coach of the Year Honors while leading the Terriers. He played his collegiate soccer at Iona and later played professionally, including for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer
