Manhattan set to lock horns with Army

Riverdale, N.Y. — Manhattan is set to return to action on Sunday, Aug. 18 when the Jaspers visit Army for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

-On Thursday night, Manhattan dropped their season opener at Fordham, 2-1. After giving up 2 first-half goals, Manhattan battled hard in the second half and found the back of the net in the 88th minute on a corner kick from senior captain Julia Nicholas. For her career, the Connecticut native has 8 goals while sporting the Kelly Green and White.

-Manhattan outshot Fordham 6-3 in the second half and also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.

-Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Brunk turned in a solid performance in the 2-1 loss at Fordham. She ended her night with four saves, and was particularly effective from the late first half on. Brunk has started in every game for the Jaspers since arriving last fall.

-Freshman defender Lily Bandel received her first collegiate start and played the full 90 minutes, joining Nicholas, Maddie Feller, and Mayah Wheeler as key cogs on the backline.

-Redshirt sophomore Amaya Hill returned to the line-up after missing the entirety of the 2023 season due to a knee injury. She started up top and logged 52 minutes. Sunday's game will be a homecoming for Hill, whose father, Aaron, is a West Point graduate who spent 27 years on active duty for the United States Military. Aaron now serves as Deputy Head of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at West Point. Amaya and her family live on the West Point campus.

-18 Jaspers saw action at Fordham on Thursday night. Nicholas, Feller, Bandel, Brunk and Wheeler each played the full 90 minutes.

-Lawler returns to West Point after serving as an assistant for Army from 2006 to 2009.

-Army (0-1-0) is fresh off a 1-0 loss at home to Wake Forest, who received three votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll released during the preseason and fall just outside the Top 25. Wake Forest's Hannah Johnson squeezed in the game-winning goal in the 40th minute to defeat Army.

-Army's senior captain Sage Strohman recorded 14 saves vs. Wake Forest. That was the most from an Army goalkeeper since 2014. Strohman was named the 2024 Patriot League Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

-In total, Army had 8 players named to All-Patriot League Teams in 2023. Army returns senior forward and 2023 All-Patriot League First Team honoree Kaelan Bradley who netted 5 goals last season. Brigid Duffy, an All-American lacrosse player at Army, was also named to the All-Patriot League First Team after tallying 7 goals and 3 assists on the pitch in 2023. Senior defender Keira Vesy was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team in 2023 when she helped anchor an Army defense that only allowed a meager 0.67 goals per game in Patriot League play.

-Army was chosen in first place in the Patriot League's preseason poll and are two-time Patriot League Regular Season defending champions.

-Tracy Chao is in her fifth season as head coach at Army. She was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in both 2022 and 2023. Chao has an overall record of 30-21-14.

SERIES HISTORY

-Manhattan holds an all-time record of 2-9-0 against Army, with the last meeting between both schools coming back in 2010 at West Point. Army won that game 1-0 which came during Lawler's first season at the helm for Manhattan. Army was a charter member of the MAAC before leaving the conference in 1990.

"Army's where I started so it's nice to go back there," Lawler said. "It's a beautiful place with fantastic people who serve our country so we are honored to be there in the first place. Once the game starts it's just like every other one that we want to go get."

The action will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live updates and postgame coverage will be provided from @jasperswsoc and @gojaspers on Instagram and X.
