Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – All cylinders fired for the Manhattan Jaspers baseball team as they took a commanding 9-3 win over Marist in the first contest Saturday afternoon, however, a top performance from the Red Foxes mound silenced the Jaspers bats and forced a 9-6 dropped decision at the hands of the foe. The series finale and rubber game at McCann Baseball Field is set for a noon start.
With the split, Manhattan moves to 12-24 overall and 5-9 in MAAC action. Marist sits at 13-24 and 6-8, respectively.
Game One
A give-and-take battle saw both teams exchange runs through five innings until Manhattan pushed forward with six unanswered runs to clinch.
Trevor Hansen drove
Vincent Davis across on a single up the middle and later scored on a mishandled base hit from Aiden Katzman and an errant throw. Up two entering the seventh,
Drew Wyers tagged his fourth homer of the season with a a solo shot to left for the Jaspers' 6-3 edge. Manhattan added their final pair of runs with a 2RBI single from
Chase Swain in the eight.
Hansen led Manhattan's offense, going 3-for-5, while
Daniel Perez continued his strong performance with a 2-for-5 outing.
Justin Solimine pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, while
Greg Shaw (2-1) claimed the win with 4.1 scoreless innings.
Game Two
The last began much like the first with both teams putting up an early three runs to knot the game. The Jaspers tallied four hits in the second frame from
Frankie Marinelli,
Trevor Santos, Katzman, and Perez.
Garret Garbinski managed to get through two innings unscathed before Marist matched Manhattan's three runs on a double sandwiched between a pair of singles. The Jaspers answered with another three-run inning, this time in the fifth highlighted by a 2RBI single from Hansen and a deep double from
Andreaus Lewis.
The Red Foxes not only matched but bested the Jaspers in the bottom half taking advantage of Garbinski's fatigue that put two runners on thanks to a walk and hit batter.
Michael Staiano subbed in for the sophomore and issued another pair of walks for a run and the go-ahead on base. Johnny Decker belted a two-base knock for two RBIs and a fielder's choice gave Marist their fifth and final run of the frame.
Brian Yetter faced the minimum in each of the final four frames to secure his second win of the second and lead Marist to the 9-6 victory.
Manhattan had seven batters record hits in the second game. Staiano was saddled with the loss after the 2.2-inning effort.
