BROOKLYN, NY – The Manhattan softball team dropped a pair of contests Thursday on the road, in a non-conference doubleheader against Long Island.
Game 1 – Long Island 5, Manhattan 0
The first run of the game would come by a two out, RBI double from Lindsey Cowans to take a 1-0 lead for Long Island. The score would stick through the majority of the game, as both teams were scraping to get runners on base early on. In the fifth, Manhattan got a double from Lily Fish to give themselves runners on second and third with one out, but could not get a run in. The Sharks finally added insurance in the sixth, with an RBI single followed by a three-run home run from Cowans to take a 5-0 lead. Manhattan went down in order in the seventh, ending the game with a 5-0 loss.
Cowans was the star of the game for Long Island, throwing a complete game two-hit shutout, as well as driving in four runs on offense. Mollie Charest was charged with the loss for Manhattan, pitching six innings for the Jaspers today.
Game 2 – Long Island 2, Manhattan 0
In the first inning, both teams would get two runners on base, but neither were able to drive a run in. Long Island would get an RBI single in the second inning from Dallas Andrews, but left the bases loaded to end the inning, keeping the score at 1-0 after two. The second Long Island run would come via an error in the fourth inning, allowing Andrews to score from second base to make the score 2-0. The Jaspers got two runners on base in the seventh inning, but could not finish the rally, ending the game with a 2-0 loss.
