Jaspers Take Down Purple Eagles on Sunday

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan softball team played the final game of their three-game series with Niagara today, taking an 8-4 victory on Sunday at Gaelic Park.

In the top of the first, Niagara would load the bases before scoring runs on a walk and a hit by pitch to take an early 2-0 lead. The Jaspers would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning via an RBI double from Maddy Weir. Manhattan would tie the game in the second, when Gabriella Mazzotta grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing a run home.

Manhattan would capitalize on some Niagara mistakes in the third inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch, before adding two more on an error, and finally tacking on an RBI single from Lily Fish to widen the lead to 6-2. The fourth and fifth innings would be scoreless, keeping the score at 6-2 entering the sixth. Niagara would hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth driving in a run, but the Jaspers would add insurance in the bottom of the inning. Weir would connect on another RBI double, before Bella Cahueque would bring her home with a single, to extend the lead to 8-3. Niagara connected on an RBI double in the seventh, but could not put together a rally, giving the Jaspers the 8-4 win on Sunday afternoon.

Weir finished 3/3 with three doubles, two RBI, and one run. Mazzotta went 2/4 with one RBI, and two runs from the leadoff spot.

Mollie Charest picked up the win for Manhattan, tossing six innings allowing no earned runs and striking out eight. Sophia Kiseloski entered in the seventh to pitch the final inning.
