Baseball Drops Conference Opener in 11-8 Battle

Davis goes 4-for-5 in career-best outing

Box Score POMONA, N.Y. – Despite an early lead and a fierce offensive effort, the Manhattan Jaspers baseball team fell short in their home and conference opener against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, surrendering to an 11-8 defeat on Friday evening at Clover Stadium.

With this loss, Manhattan's overall record dips to 6-14, beginning their MAAC campaign at 0-1. Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary's advances to 4-13-1 overall, securing a crucial 1-0 start in conference play.

"Today was a good game. Their young freshman came in and shut us down in the last three innings. We are playing good baseball, but not lights-out baseball," said head coach Dave Miller.

The Jaspers took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Drew Wyers blasted a triple to left center to drive home Frank Marinelli who reached on a double. Vincent Davis followed with a single to score Wyers and moved his way around the bases on a ground out and two errant pitches from the Mountaineer mound.

Scott Seeker answered with one of his two homers tallied for the night, a three-run hit in the top of the third to knot the game. However, Manhattan's bats stayed hot and pushed ahead 4-3 with an RBI single from Dylan Mayer.

Both teams added four runs each throughout the next three innings to keep things tight, but a seventh-inning double from Correa dropped into right-center brought three runs across to give the Mountaineers a 10-8 edge that couldn't be overcome. Seeker's second homer in the eighth gave The Mount its game-winning tally.

Left-hander John Kwiatkowski handled business in the top of the ninth, striking out three of his four batters faced, putting the comeback in the hands of Manhattan's offense. Trailing 11-8 on one out, Perez reached on a wide throw to first to keep the game alive. The rally ended shortly after when Josiah Brown repeated the infield line drive straight into a double play.

Davis led the charge for the Jaspers, delivering a career-best plate performance on a 4-for-5 outing, including two RBI. Wyers contributed three hits, while Marinelli and Logan Pfannenbecker each added a pair.

On the pitching front, Justin Solimine provided a solid five-inning start, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Greg Shaw (0-1) absorbed the loss after three innings of relief, conceding five runs on five hits, while tallying four strikeouts.

Deven Sheerin earned the win for the Mountaineers in four innings of relief, holding the 13 Jaspers faced to just one while striking out seven.

"We need to keep battling and get over this hump. We are a very good baseball team and I believe in us," added Miller.
