RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team fell to visiting Bryant this afternoon at Gaelic Park. On a cool rainy day, both teams battled it out in Manhattan's second home game of the season.
Â
"Our players competed hard today against a real tough Bryant team. We are focused on getting better every single day and are preparing for the start of MAAC conference games," said head coach
Doug Sage
The Jaspers struck first when
Kyle Gucwa received a pass from
Sean Shelko that he slid right past the Bryant goalkeeper for the score less than two minutes into the game.
Â
The Bulldogs responded by rattling off four consecutive goals, two from Timmy Hackett, to lead 4-1 midway through the second.
Â
Manhattan stopped the Bulldogs groove with back-to-back goals by Gucwa for the hat trick.Â
Â
At the break, Bryant led 6-4.
Â
The two teams split the scoring in the third period. Bryant scored two goals within the first four minutes, and Manhattan scored goals with seven and two minutes left in the period, as Bryant held a two-goal advantage heading into the final period.Â
Â
The Bulldogs pressed on the peddle in the fourth period, scoring four goals and holding Manhattan to one to escape with a five-goal win.
Â
Both Shelko and
Kelly DuPree tallied one assist each. Defensively,
Michael Schafer had four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Connor Hapward made eight saves in the goal.Â
Â
Gucwa finished with four goals (7 shots, 5 shots on goal) and five ground balls.Â
Â
Bryant goalkeeper Scott Einarson made nine saves, while Johnny Hackett had three goals and four assists.
Â
Manhattan returns to play on Sunday, March 10 when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at 12 p.m. at Gaelic Park to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
