Box Score HEMPSTEAD, NY – Logan Pfannenbecker and Vincent Davis each recorded a pair of hits in Manhattan College's 9-1 series-opening loss to Hofstra on Friday at University Field. The three-game series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Both Pfannenbecker and Davis logged 2-for-4 efforts at the plate with Pfannenbecker tallying one of the Jaspers' two extra-base hits on an eighth inning double. Davis drove in the lone run for Manhattan (4-12) with a single in the fourth inning, which momentarily tied the game at 1-1.
Hofstra (6-9) was fueled by a strong pitching performance by Michael O'Hanlon and timely hitting. O'Hanlon (1-1) came up two outs shy of a complete game, tossing a career-high 8.1 innings. He allowed just six hits, striking out seven with just one walk, and induced 13 groundouts.
Meanwhile, the Pride scored five of their nine runs with two outs. Hofstra's top three hitters in the lineup provided the bulk of damage as Dylan Palmer, Santino Rosso and Alex McCoy combined to go 6-for-13 with six runs batted in and five runs scored.
McCoy got Hofstra on the board first with a run-scoring single up the middle to score Palmer in the bottom of the first inning, after Palmer reached on an error.
Manhattan had its first scoring opportunity in the top of third. Jake Hatch led the inning off with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, Hatch was gunned down at the plate on a fielder's choice.
The Jaspers then extinguished a Pride rally in the bottom half of the inning when Justin Solimine stranded runners on second and third with a pair of strikeouts. Manhattan carried that momentum into the fourth as Davis tied the game with his fourth RBI of the season on a single, scoring Drew Wyers.
Hofstra immediately had an answer though, scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. After Palmer drove in two with a single, he scored on one of Rosso's three doubles on the afternoon to pad Hofstra's lead to 4-1.
The home team added to their advantage with a five-run sixth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Jasper errors. Hofstra strung together three hits – the last coming via a two-run two-out double by Luke Masiuk to cap the game's scoring.
In the loss, Solimine (1-4) gave up seven hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked four, while allowing seven runs (five earned). Greg Shaw entered in relief and struck out four in three innings, only allowing two unearned runs.
